Advice from the EH Smith Landscaping Team

"The main thing that drives people away from composite decking is the price, but it is the best decking option out there. Our composite decking not only looks the part, but it is also hard wearing and long lasting, backed by a extensive warranty up to 25 years. The upfront cost is higher but ultimately you are paying to not do it twice. No wooden fibres mean no moulding, swelling or warping and the lost-head fixings mean there are no screws or nails sticking out like a sore thumb, like a cherry on top of a cake, if you will!"

Composite Decking FAQ's

Composite decking is made from a combination of materials designed to replicate the look and feel of natural timber decking whilst offering superior performance. Our Millboard range uses a fibre-reinforced polyurethane core composed of over a third recycled materials including limestone diverted from landfill, topped with a hand-tinted Lastane surface layer that provides exceptional scratch, fade and slip resistance. Each board is composed of a blend of 38% recycled materials, including limestone diverted from landfill, bonded in a polymer resin. Crucially, Millboard contains no actual wooden fibres, eliminating the risk of warping, rotting, moulding or insect damage.

Composite decking offers significant advantages over traditional timber. It requires no sanding, staining or annual treatment, is fully resistant to rot, mould and insect damage, and will not warp or swell over time. Millboard's Lastane surface provides higher slip resistance than timber even in wet conditions, and with a 25 year residential warranty it is built to outlast traditional wood decking considerably. The upfront cost is higher, but as our team put it, you are paying to not do it twice.

Our Millboard composite decking comes with a 25 year residential warranty and 10 year commercial warranty as standard. It must be activated within 90 days of purchase. To activate it, simply send your receipt directly to Millboard and they will issue your warranty certificate. It is a straightforward process and well worth doing to protect your investment. You can also ask your local branch landscaping team to help you active your warranty. Other composite decking brands stocked in branch will carry their own warranty terms, so always ask your local EH Smith landscaping team for more details and advice on how to register.

Millboard's fibre-reinforced closed-cellular internal structure is engineered for exceptional strength and durability whilst remaining lightweight. Under normal use and with correct installation it should not crack, split or break. The board composition is entirely wood-free, which also eliminates the risk of the kind of structural degradation that affects traditional timber over time, such as rotting, warping or insect damage. The boards also contain integrated UV stabilisers to ensure impressive fade resistance over time. The elastomeric surface also ensures increased weather resistance against the wide range of seasonal UK weather.

Start by measuring the length and width of your deck area and calculating the square meterage. Factor in any waste from cuts, particularly if your deck has an irregular shape or requires angled cuts, and always order a little more than you think you need. Our landscaping teams across all EH Smith builders merchant branches are happy to help you work out quantities and make sure you order the right amount for your project. It is always better to have a little spare than to run short mid-installation.

Think about what is already around your outdoor space. Warmer tones like golden oak composite decking work beautifully alongside traditional brick properties and natural stone, whilst cooler greys like limed oak composite decking and darker finishes such as burnt cedar composite decking suit contemporary rendered properties and modern garden designs. Consider the colour of your house, any existing paving or walling, and how much natural light the space receives. Coming into your local EH Smith branch to see the range in person is always the best approach, our expert landscaping teams can also help you find a combination that ties your whole outdoor space together.

One of the biggest benefits of composite decking is how little maintenance it requires compared to traditional timber decking. There is no sanding, staining or oiling needed. Simply clean as required using appropriate cleaning products for the deck location. Millboard's non-porous Lastane surface actively resists mould and algae growth, meaning your decking should stay looking its best with minimal effort year round.

There’s something about the first properly warm days of early summer this year that made me look out my garden and think "right, something needs to change.".… actually, that may have just been my knee giving way coming down the stairs one time too many, but more likely it's my winter-worn flower beds, the patio that's seen better days, or just the nagging feeling that I could be getting a little more joy out of my garden week in, week out. But if you’re anything like me, these lighter evenings and warmer days come with a little more energy to tackle the jobs I’ve been putting off since, well, October...

So to celebrate the launch of our new 2026 Landscaping Brochure, which is jam-packed with the some of the best garden supplies you could ask for, I’ve asked some of our landscaping experts from across our branches for their honest tips, favourite products, and hard-won advice on getting your garden looking its best this summer.

Fernco Strengthens Support for Property Flood Resilience

With climate change driving increasingly severe and unpredictable weather patterns, Fernco is reaffirming its commitment to protecting UK homes and businesses from rising flood risk. By supporting the Government’s Be Flood Ready initiative, Fernco is leading the charge in property flood resilience (PFR)—offering practical, cost-effective solutions that can be sourced directly from trusted builders’ merchants across the UK.

Forecasts indicate that one in four UK properties could face flood risk by 2050, with the Environment Agency already issuing flood alerts nationwide this autumn. As the country prepares for a wetter, windier season, the need for reliable flood protection solutions is more urgent than ever.

“Flooding is becoming more frequent and more severe across the UK,” says Ryan Lockwood, National Sales and Marketing Manager at Fernco. “While the UK Government has pledged £2.65 billion for flood defence, less than £100,000 is specifically allocated to property-level flood protection.
